My story was featured on The Ellen Show, and I was interviewed by Reuters, CNN and the New York Times.

In March 2021 my encounter with an octopus in Western Australia made headlines worldwide. Writing plays became an integral part of a year as a theatre director and actor at Cornell in NY, but my dream has always been to write novels. My passion for writing has been juggled with a career in mining since completing university in Australia and the USA. The opportunity to fill history with a novel was too enticing to ignore. And what happened to those tapes? Nobody knows.

What intrigued me most were the stories about ‘las cintas’– a series of clandestine recordings used by Noriega to blackmail his way to power. But what if they weren’t?Īs a geologist I’ve always had a fascination with Central America – balancing on the edge of the Caribbean plate and bubbling with volcanoes – but my experiences there ignited my passion for a far more reactive history. As legend has it these tapes were destroyed in the bombing of Noriega’s headquarters.

A series of secret tape recordings of his dealings with American officials and the CIA became a thorn in the side of the US until 1989, when the government’s patience finally ended. Unlike his fellow tyrants, the power of Panama’s most notorious criminal came not from brutality, but blackmail.

Names like Castro, Hussein and Gaddafi have all haunted the Western world, but none has invoked as much fear in the White House as Manuel Noriega. The mysteries of two generations blend into an action-packed chase across the Caribbean, where outrageous yet real events lead to a shocking truth that threatens to bring down the highest ranks of the White House. His quest is rekindled a generation later, when an English dancer learns of her mother’s previous life in Panama. When an outspoken critic of the Noriega regime is murdered in 1985, the investigations of a fledgling Canadian journalist lead him into the underworld of the CIA. Based on true events, The Noriega Tapes is the ‘ Narcos of Panama ’ – a thrilling tale of murder, conspiracy and Caribbean adventure where facts blend seamlessly with fiction.
